I only play a tough guy on TV

I posted at Milwaukeean Rhapsody about the Bronze Fonz . . . how I didn't really mind the statue but wished that Henry WInkler was less of a weenie than what he actually is. That got me thinking . . . who else plays a "tough guy" in movies or on TV that is actually a weenie in real life?

Well, Winkler, for sure.

How about Corbin Bernsen?

Pierce Brosnan?

Anyone else?

What exactly is your definition of "weenie"? Men who promote literacy and education are weenies? Who are you? I'm sorry, but you call yourself a "heck of a good daddy"? Sorry, I don't get it.

Well, a person with a sense of humor, for one.

I think what Jimi refers to, Linda, are actors who are so unlike the characters they're known for that once you find out what they're like when not acting it's hard to ever watch them in that type of role again. Winkler is a perfect example. Throughout the '70s and '80s he was one of television's "coolest" characters, but once I saw how he was in real life it was always tough to view him as the Fonze after that.

John Wayne, on the other hand, was, according to all accounts, just as much a tough guy in real life as he was on screen.

Ultimately it just goes to show that we're all better off knowing as little about the personal lives of actors as possible. It really has nothing to do with what they do on screen, and if the real person is too different from the character, suspension of disbelief just becomes too hard.
